I velivoli sono decollati dopo che quattro distinti gruppi di aeromobili sono stati rilevati dalle difese aere NATO nello spazio aereo internazionale, vicino agli stati baltici.

Gli aerei sono stati successivamente identificati come un bomardiere Tupolev Tu22,  quattro caccia Sukhoi Su27 , un Beriev A50 addetto alla sorveglianza aerea e un velivolo da trasporto Antonov An26 Curl.
